We've just finished our app, Backorders, which allows your customers to order your out of stock products, with the promise they will be fulfilled at a later date.

Everything is customizable, including the backorder alerts which are automatically displayed on products when their inventory hits zero. Emails are sent to customers to alert them of their backorder. And you can individually view and manage each backorder in a backorder dashboard.
This is the first version of our app and we're looking to give it away for free to our early users.
