I have looked and looked and apparently I'm not the only one. There are many threads over the years that ask for better shipping but I haven't found a good answer to my problem.
We drop ship auto parts. Everything is drop shipped so I don't have any need for a subscription plan to give carrier calculated rates, print labels or anything of that nature which is what most of the apps seem to be for.
So here's our problem which I'm sure isn't unique. We offer free shipping on orders over $99 with the exception of certain items like large bumpers, sets of tires and wheels etc. I have tried setting the weights for these items to a specific number to trigger the flat fee for that perticular item but since it's also over $99 it triggers the option for free shipping. Of course nobody is going to select the $49 shipping fee when the option is there for free shipping so is there an app or a workaround even that will let me set up this type of shipping?
Like I said, I don't want to pay a monthly fee for an app that has all the shipping bells and whistles since I won't use any of it anyway. Also I know I can just add that fee to the cost of the product but I'm pretty sure that would just drive off customers to the competition where the price is listed lower and shipping is added at checkout. A lot of my competitors list these parts as "free shipping" but then add a "handling fee" at checkout. But they still have them listed with the lower price to get people to add to cart to start with.
In Volusion I could set the weight to zero, uncheck "free shipping item" and add a specific shipping cost for that item alone then add a note over the price that the shipping fee would be added. I switched to Volusion last year because of this and a couple other things but haven't been too happy overall. Now that I am making the switch back I'm slowly remembering what drove me away to begin with. My move back hasn't been the smooth transition I had hoped for.
